DIAMOND DAY

Maybe it's just me getting older, but I'm increasingly amazed by the small things that bring me joy these days. For instance, just yesterday, I was playing Diamond Day by Vashti Bunyan—a song I first discovered on The Big Chill compilation in 2006 while working in a local record store—only to learn, to my amazement, that Robin Williamson (of Incredible String Band fame) played the recorder and flute on the track.

Why would this be a big deal for me?

My late father was a huge fan of Williamson, and somehow, the surprise of learning that one of his favourite musicians was magically playing in the background of a song I’ve only ever thought of within my own personal timeline, as I discovered it, created a feeling of warmth and happiness—a sense of invisible connection beyond the perceived limitation of death.

The song itself is from Vashti Bunyan's 1970 debut album, Just Another Diamond Day, and encourages listeners to find joy in everyday moments, viewing each day as precious—a "diamond day."

A sentiment my Buddhist dad, with his Diamond Sutra, would have wholeheartedly approved of.

And so, in keeping with the spirit of the song, I wish you all a Diamond Monday.
