EVERY TIME IT RAINS

If you're going to do anything with the rain and drizzle then I believe you might as well use it to wallow in misery with the appropriate music. I just wish Sinatra had done a concept album for Capitol Records on this specific vibe/mood perhaps something along the lines of 'Songs For When It's Pissing Down' kind of thing or possibly 'Songs For All Types Of Weather' better suited for us weather-obsessed Brits.

Randy Newman's 'Every Time It Rains' is my personal go-to rainy-day track and I find it strangely poignant that he originally wrote it for Michael Jackson who for some strange reason turned it down. Just imagine the video that might have gone with it where you could have had MJ and Bubbles estranged from one another in their separate wings of Neverland while the rain chucks it down all around the unmoving fairground rides in the grounds of Jacko's vast estate.

Now I know a lot of people dislike Randy's voice but the way I see it, he's no worse (and in many ways far better) than Bob Dylan's strangled raccoon attempts at singing. I personally love the way Randy sings this track with his 'Kermit' vocals accompanied by those reassuring Ray Charles-like piano chords. Hey, now that I think about it, The Muppets would have done a great rendition of this song, a sort of B-side sequel to Robin the Frog's 'Halfway Down The Stairs'. No, but in all seriousness, this song for me is what I imagine a grown-up Charlie Brown might sing after Snoopy's died and he's lost his girl. Or boy?

Anyway, just thought I'd share it with you all. Who knows, one of you sad sacks like me might need a rainy day track to help double down on your wet misery today.
