I AM NOT ENOUGH

Holy, holy art thou, I am free because you were bound
Holy art thou, most holier
Calling on your strength and your power, one way that I've found
I am not enough, not enough, holy art thou
There's something powerful about a fallen person humbling themselves before a higher power in their darkest moment. It's the contrast between the lows of human experience and the aspiration toward something beyond ourselves that makes it especially moving.
I don't doubt there's still enough braggadocio and ego inside of the artist Ye to power the planet twice over, but listening to the song “Mission Control” from his latest album Bully, later removed from the final version, I found something beautiful in the way it creates a moment of light amidst the darkness that has surrounded him personally, professionally, and spiritually.
Moments of humility from someone with such enormous self-regard somehow hit deeper precisely because the vertiginous distance between the clouds of illusion and the reality of the ground is so vast for that giant level of celebrity.
And yet, I can relate. I’m prone to Quixote-like delusions of grandeur myself and sometimes forget the ground beneath my feet.
Listening to this soulful prayer reminded me that I need to remember the lesson more often.
