OOO BABY BABY

I did you wrong
My heart went out to play
But in the game I lost you
What a price to pay

It's only Monday, and already my mind has been blown just learning that Ella Fitzgerald (my favorite singer alongside Frank Sinatra) sang a cover version of Smokey Robinson's 'Ooo Baby Baby' (a song I've loved since I was a kid).

There's something so relaxed and effortless about Ella's way of performing this song that it feels like a grown-up lullaby, in which she seems to be singing a heartbreak lament to the memory of her ex — perhaps over a cocktail or two in a sunlit rooftop bar overlooking the city, or while sitting in solitude on a park bench on a spring evening, watching loving couples walk by.

Only recently, I had been discussing with a friend what the greatest breakup song is, and he stated emphatically that it's The Mavericks' 'Dance the Night Away,' while I've been more privately convinced it could be 'I Can Let Go Now' by Michael McDonald. However, listening to Ella sing this ultra-dreamy version of 'Ooo Baby Baby,' we may have a new contender for the top spot.

Heartbreak has never been so sweet.
